A hook-up turned lethal. A spurned, angry cowboy. Can rebel Maggie turn the tables before a killer adds her to the list of lost causes?

Washed-up alt-country rocker-turned-junker Maggie Killian is pulled to Wyoming by an irresistible force . . . former bull rider Hank Sibley, the man who broke her heart fifteen years before. When she unexpectedly meets his Sunday school-teaching girlfriend at a saloon, Maggie seeks liquor-fueled oblivion between the sheets of a younger man’s bed. But after her beloved vintage truck breaks down and leaves her stranded in the Cowboy State, she learns her hook-up died minutes after leaving their rendezvous. Suddenly surrounded by men with questionable motives, Maggie searches for the murderer while fighting the electricity between herself and her old beau, and her new penchant for local whiskey.

When the police zero in on Maggie despite a disturbing series of break-ins at her guest cabin, she realizes she’s got no one to rely on but herself. To keep herself happily in bars instead of behind them, she must stop the killer before the cops realize the man she really suspects is a jealous, angry Hank.

Live Wire is the first standalone book in a trilogy featuring sharp-tongued protagonist Maggie Killian from the addictive What Doesn’t Kill You romantic mystery series. If you like nerve-racking suspense, electric characters and relationships, and juicy plot twists, then you’ll love USA Today best seller Pamela Fagan Hutchins’ Silver Falchion award-winning series.

“Maggie is irresistible.”

Let me start by saying that when I finished the last lines of this novel, I had to remind myself I was holding my beloved Kindle and NOT a paperback before I winged it across the room with an infuriated shout of

“Oh, NO you DIDN’T just end it like THAT!!!!”

And as infuriated as I was, I had to confess – that emotion was a clear indication of how invested I was in Maggie and her story.

(And then I went right to Amazon and pre-ordered the next book in the series, of which the author assures me that she started the next book where this one ended, just for me. Fine, I know she didn’t do it for me, but I appreciate it.)

Maggie Killian is a faded country rocker- from Texas who is now an antiques dealer of sorts. She was famous until she wasn’t; she’s beautiful and sultry and charismatic; stubborn and vulnerable and damaged. She’s basically trouble in cowboy boots, but there is something about her that makes you want to root for her.

Hank Sibly broke her heart more than once and because she’s stubborn, not over him, and a hot mess, she made the excuse take an antique picking trip to Wyoming in an attempt to hunt him down. Unfortunately, seeing him again makes her do something stupid. (Haven’t we all been there?)

For most of us, hopefully, that mistake doesn’t end up dead in the parking lot shortly after spending the night together.

While she should be getting out of Wyoming, she decides she hasn’t suffered enough (fool men, too much booze, or good sense, apparently) and heads out to look for Hank before she heads home. Instead, she lands herself in one pickle after another; each situation leads to more questions, less answers, and adds to the danger she has found herself in.

Pamela Fagan Hutchins wickedly builds electricity between Maggie and Hank, toys with our emotions, throws in enough bad guys and bad blood to have your head spin with whodunnits and twists, and tops it off with sharp-witted dialogue.

Where Live Wire really shines, however, is both in character development and in voice – the author is a true storyteller, and her story and characters unfold on the page and then grab you by the arms and drag you in.

Live Wire is the first book in the Maggie trilogy within the What Doesn’t Kill You universe, and like all the other trilogies, works as a standalone. I say “universe” because there is a fun “7 degrees of separation” between all the main protagonists, but you don’t need to have read any of the previous books to enjoy this one.

While the mystery in this story IS wrapped up in the end, Maggie’s story isn’t, not by a long shot, and I’ll be impatient until the next book arrives on my doorstep.
