Independence Day

As one might imagine, here in the UK the “4th of July” is merely the day that follows the 3rd of July, a fact that still continues to mystify my children.

Go figure.

So while we would historically be watching a parade in our hometown and then heading to my Aunt Merrie’s for a party in her pool and maybe a drink or two….(gone are the days of Mom’s cousin Gary’s sideline-style drinks cooler of Long Island Iced Teas, thankyouverymuch, as I’ve got my kids with me now), we play it low-key now.

Very low-key.

Since it’s a work/school day for us here.

Still, we gave it our best attempt. Earlier in the day I had picked up proper hot dogs (frankfurters), hamburgers (ok, beef burgers), sweet corn (from Spain), burger buns (not baps) and fixings for both pasta salad (with a Waitrose vinagrette, since I can’t get trusty old Wishbone “Zesty Italian” here) and brownie sundaes, complete with red, white, and blue jimmies (leftover from the Jubilee sales) to sprinkle on top.

I also found American beer at Waitrose. Woohoo!

If not for the 60 degree weather and slight misting of rain (and total lack of humidity), it wasn’t far off from a cookout we would have had back in the States.

Without the fireworks.

(Unless Pea’s meltdown at bedtime counts. Prolly not, eh?)

Ooh, and the other bit that truly made it Independence Day?

My trip to the hospital = being able to (start) taking off my air boot (cast). I’m freed from the constraints of that heavy boot!

Until my foot starts aching, and then I voluntarily pop it back on.

All in all, it was a good day.

They are OXO Good Grips, actually. I most embarrassingly overpaid for them at Waitrose (because I haven’t been able to find them over here, and stumbled upon them), but I’m sure you can get them at Bed Bath & Beyond or Target. They look good and sturdy, as opposed to my lost corn-shaped holders.
