What I’m Reading Wednesday: The Nightstand Edition

It’s been cold, and I’ve just wanted to curl up with a book and a cup of tea. Because of this, and some overenthusiastic trips to both the library and the bookstore, I now have a stack of books on my nightstand (and on my coffee table, and on my end table).

We won’t talk about what I’ve downloaded to my Kindle recently, or the NetGalley advanced reader copies I have waiting to be read…

The weather has been miserable, which makes me race through my to-do list so that I can curl up with a cup of tea and a chocolate digestive biscuit for an hour or so in the afternoon before the school run.

It’s a luxury, I know. It’s also my escape.  So let’s get on with it, so I can get back to it.

WIRWnightstand

It’s time for What I’m Reading Wednesday – this is the “what’s on my nightstand” edition!   As much as I enjoyed having an extra break these past few days with the kids in school, I’m happy to get back to my schedule, which does include finishing this first book before I have to get it back to the library.

glitterglue

Glitter and Glue: A Memoir by Kelly Corrigan is what I’m currently completely absorbed in at the moment, and has inspired another post coming later this week. Glitter and Glue is the memoir of author Kelly Corrigan, and in telling the tale of a time when she worked as a nanny in Australia it really becomes the story of how she really began to SEE her mother as a person, and learned the difference between travel and true life experiences. While I laugh at the earnest post-college Kelly who is so enthusiastic with her mantras like Things happen when you leave the house, it is her insights into her mother that resonated with me the most, as looking back I can see all the teenaged views I had of my own mother and how I missed so much of who she was.

But that’s another post.

It’s a charming story and I highly recommend it!

I had started this next one before Miss M and I went to the local library to get our new library cards. I shouldn’t read two books at once. It generally leads to not enough sleep.

storiedlifeajfikry

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin has been repeatedly recommended to me and it found its way into my shopping cart last week. I don’t know what it is with me and stories of bookshops and mysteries, but here is another one. A.J. Fiery is a cranky, recently widowed owner of a struggling bookshop whose prized book has been stolen. Soon after, something is left in his bookshop that  changes everything (but I won’t give it away!)  I’m loving this book so far!

Next on my to- read list is

rosieproject

Finally ticked off my to-read list is The Rosie Project: A Novel by Graeme Simsion. It is a quirky love story about an even quirkier genetics professor who has never been on a second date. (You’ll figure out why quickly enough.) When a friend says that Don Tillman would make the “perfect husband”,  he decides that the right woman must be out there, statistically, and as an analytical mind might, embarks upon the “Wife Project” to find the perfect, logical, punctual partner.  He is awkward, tactless, and oblivious of it. Rosie – a barmaid, a drinker, and anything but timely – does not fit the bill.  Rosie is looking for her biological father, and while she is entirely unsuitable for Don, he helps her on her quest, and along the way learns that not everything in life follows a formula.  (Oh, and if you like this book, it is followed by The Rosie Effect. )

The Rosie Project was optioned by Sony Pictures and will be made into a movie. I generally prefer to read the book before the movie comes out, and as this one is still in early stages, you have time. I have a feeling that if you like “Big Bang Theory”, you will love the protagonist, Don.

careoflies

The Care and Management of Lies: A Novel of the Great War by Jacqueline Winspear was long awaited by this fan of the author of the Maisie Dobbs series.  But this is no Maisie Dobbs story. It took a bit longer for me to get into it but I stuck with it and was rewarded with a really warm tale of love and the lengths that we go to protect our loved ones.

That wraps up this week’s books! So tell me: what is on YOUR nightstand?
