(Not Remotely) Silent Sunday: When You Give a Kid a Camera

STHKidsNightCollage

What do you get when you give your 9-year-old not-really-a-soccer-fan daughter your banged-up Canon G-11 camera so she doesn’t torment her 11-year-old “eat-sleep-breathe soccer” brother when they are given the (hopefully not) once in a lifetime opportunity to sit on the bench at an MLS game while the teams warm up? (Other than an over-hyphenated question?)

You get this.

Hmmm…

Can you call it a photobomb if someone walks in FRONT of your shot? Yes, lets.

About half of the shots were on a weird angle. Let’s just call them “artsy”.

I need to do some instruction on framing a shot.

That’s better.

And. What????

Yes, according to her brother, she said “I’m taking a picture of all their butts.” This IS the same girl who likes her dresses to her knees and her necklines not low, so I guess it IS true that there is a 10-year-old boy in all of us.

Otherwise, heaven help her daddy in a few years.

If you give a kid a camera with a screen that flips out, and you will surely get this.

And this.

Last Saturday’s match was Season Ticket Holder Kids’ Night and warming the bench was only one of the opportunities they could have chosen, along with upgrading to a field seat, or carrying a banner, or for the little ones, walking in with a player, among several choices. Needless to say, it was the most fun SHE has had at a match, and having the camera kept her occupied so she wouldn’t annoy the big guy as he was intent on watching FC Dallas warm up. When the “bench warming” was done she and big bro and the rest of the kids joined the rally tunnel of fans and high-fived the players.

As for the camera she used, I absolutely LOVE the Canon G-11 for on the go – its got everything but a really big zoom (as you can tell) or interchangeable lenses, but it is fast, and clear, and honestly, all of these pictures were taken with a scratched lens, to boot. If I did want to get some better, up close shots though, I will have to consider purchasing a teleconverter, but we’ll see if we use this camera again anytime soon. It’s been a sturdy little workhorse, and I’m glad that she was able to make use of it at STH Kids’ Night. It was fun to get to see the evening from HER perspective, quirky thought it was!

A big shout-out of thanks to the FC Dallas family for offering such a fun evening for our kids!

Have you given your kids a camera for a day to capture life from their perspective?
What did they take pictures of?

Last Saturday was my grandpa’s 90th birthday party. My 11yo asked for my phone so she could take pics. She was hanging out with my grandma (grandpa’s wife) and so she got some fun shots. A few of those shots are priceless to me. They are candid views of my grandparents from my daughter’s perspective.
