Book Review: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

Review

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch came out today in paperback, and if you haven’t read it yet – I’m going to tell you about it as best I can without TELLING you about it. (And also – WHY haven’t you read it yet?)

This is one of those books that is a tightrope scenario for reviewers – we have to tread carefully, because if you give too much away, it spoils ALL the fun.

And I wouldn’t want to do that. I want your mind blown as much as mine was. In fact, just avoid ANY AND ALL reviews that talk even a smidgen about the plot line. They are the bozos who tell your toddler there is no Santa Claus and steal their candy.  You WANT to go into this with no expectations, and if you’ve ready anything else by Blake Crouch (and if not, what have you been doing? Because Wayward Pines…) you’ll know that he has some pretty amazing and out there stuff up his sleeve.

Dark Matter is a roller coaster ride – it’s a flipping Alice-down-the-rabbit-hole . In a HOLY SMOKES WHAT DID I JUST READ way. You’ll need to put on your thinking cap, and maybe suspend a wee bit of disbelief in the what ifs.

Quantum mechanics. The multiverse theory – the existence of infinite realities all existing simultaneously. Think of it this way – every time you make a decision, alternate realities are created from every other possible decision/outcome.  It nearly still hurts my head to contemplate this book – I’m still finding random pieces of brain matter from this.

I mean – I think we’ve all had moments where we look back and wonder “what IF? What if I had made a different choice, taken a different path”?  What if someone took matters into their own hands and sent you down one of your alternate paths without your permission???

This book is everything – it is science fiction, adventure, and yes, there is a love story.  It throws you into the story and hurtles along at breakneck pace. There’s a lot of scientific mumbo-jumbo (sorry physics people) to try to explain what’s going on, so follow along. I’m not going to speak on the accuracy of the science-y stuff because its way about my mental capacity; my only caveat is that there is a bit at the end that is meant to drive the ending that seems to go counter to the rules, but I still think this is an amazing fun book.
