10 Things My Mother Taught Me
*Today’s post is from Mother’s Day 2011 as it’s one of my favorite Mother’s Day posts, and it still holds true. Happy Mother’s Day to all my readers who have joined the rank of “Mom”, whichever way brought you here.* There are SO many things we learn from our mothers: to tie our shoes, to say “please” and “thank you”, how to cook (coughs), to be kind to others. Really, we learn to be good humans, if we are fortunate enough to be blessed with a loving, caring mother. So in narrowing down the list, I decided to skip the obvious things and go with those that really resonate…

A Dancer’s Fracture? Oh, the Irony.
Without a moment to lose, I dashed into the street, swooping aside the toddler who had wandered in front of the delivery truck barreling down on us, shoving him aside as I… Nope. I was high up on the wall at the climbing gym when my harness failed… Nah. Everyone knows I hate heights. I was sucked into the battle, knives swirling and flashing as magic erupted around us… Closer. (No, really.) Fine. I was curled up on my sofa, lost in a battle scene from the draft of a fantasy/adventure book sent to me by a high school friend for feedback when my right foot fell asleep. It was…

Book Review: The Lemonade Year
Looking for a change of pace from my recent reads, the gift of book mail in the form of The Lemonade Year by Amy Willoughby-Burle filled the bill nicely. This book was emotional, complex, and beautifully written. Check it out: The Lemonade Year by Amy Willoughby-Burle is a wonderfully written story about family and forgiveness. It is not, at times, a happy story. This is not a light read – Nina’s family puts the “d” in “dysfunctional”, and the characters are all, in their own way, a bit broken. It is this brokenness, however, that fascinated me, as well as the secret the family kept (which you will likely…

Stuck
He turned to me with a request that would appear odd to an outsider, given his size relative to me. “Mom, can you help me get the lid off of this ice cream? It’s stuck.” This is a kid who routinely needs help opening the lids to various jars and bottles, and it amuses me to no end that I can usually pop it open with a minimum of effort while he struggles to do the same, despite the six inches he has on me in height. Used to the request, I took it from him, still chuckling while I attempted to unscrew the plastic lid, which was currently sealing…

Thoughts From My Third Erma Bombeck Writers’ Conference
When I was a kid, time was measured in countdowns – how many days until summer vacation, until my birthday, until Santa came. As an adult, time is still measured the same – how many days until I turn 50 (75, should anyone want to send me chocolate), until my next hair appointment where I can get the grays colored (13) and how many days (roughly) until I can attend the next Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop (approximately 715, give or take a week). The conference is three of the most inspiring, uplifting, positive learning- and laugh-filled days of my life. It’s definitely a roller-coaster of emotions, too, as feelings swing…

Lone Star Book Blog Tour: A Borrowed Dream by Amanda Cabot
I’m linking up with Lone Star Book Blog Tours where we are featuring A Borrowed Dream by author Amanda Cabot, the just-released second installment in her Cimarron Creek historical romance trilogy. Amanda Cabot mixes a touch of humor and suspense in this lovely (non-preachy) inspirational fiction. As an aspiring writer myself, I always jump at the chance to interview the author or host a guest post because I’m fascinated with the behind the scenes part of the process. In A Borrowed Dream, protagonist Catherine Whitfield holds a major distrust of the local doctor, and Amanda’s guest post offers a deeper look into the “healing” practices at the time (which is…
