In this, her third installment in her Gethsemane Brown mysteries, the landlord of her Irish cottage delivers an ultimatum: let a crew of ghost hunters search for the ghost that “haunts” her home if she wants to stay. Of course, she has no plans to let them see her incorrigible ghostly housemate Eamon lest they turn her home into a tourist attraction. Her relationship with the stuck-in-limbo Eamon is delightful, inasmuch as they bicker like an old married couple and she is challenged with convincing him to stay hidden.

However, Eamon isn’t the ghost she must contend with. Another composer who is hoping to reinstate his fallen reputation is preparing to debut his new opera in their small village of Dunmullach. Unfortunately, he has based his tale on a very old legend that involves a curse – a curse which is brought to Dunmullach. There is murder, a curse afflicting the firstborn sons throughout the town, and plenty of intrigue to drive the story at a quick pace.

And of course, Gethsemane gets sucked into the middle of the chaos, to the irritation of the local police. She is such a multifaceted character, curious, straight-talking, intelligent and clever. She is helped along by a great cast of characters – Father Tim from Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrows, who has a garden shed full of ancient grimoires and occult books to cast out spirits and the like; a twelve-year-old genius; and an inspector who is none too pleased with her involvement in another “situation” but trusts her puzzle solving abilities to help out. Their relationships are well drawn and as colorful as the characters themselves.

The story has plenty of twists and turns, a surfeit of bad guys, and Gordon does a great job of winding everything together as the tension mounts and more people are put at risk. Gethsemane is a character you can’t help rooting for because she’s so relatable (despite the situations she finds herself in.)

Now, I’m forever a fan of cozy mysteries because I get the action, the mystery, fun, quirky characters – without the blood and gore of some murder mysteries but with all the tension that would accompany the latter. Killing in C Sharp kept me glued to the page and I tore through the the book so quickly that I took it with me on vacation to give it another read!
