Willy…or Won’t He?
My daughter is very proud of her latest crafty creation… Um…a dog? No – it’s a dragon, right?? No… It’s an alien. A boy alien. * * * * * “That’s its willy”, she announces. I squint. “um..this?” “No, Mummy! That’s his leg. THIS is his willy!” Silly mummy. I didn’t ask her why she put a willy on her alien. I didn’t say much about it (burying head in sand) until she asked to bring it to “show and tell”, and in the rambling that followed I heard “and his willy”… Whoa, nelly. I explained that “talking about one’s private bits – yours or anyone else’s – isn’t proper.…

Day 10 of Giving Thanks: My Children’s Imaginations
Today, I am thankful for the wonderful, colorful, wacky and creative imaginations of my children. Reading their words, looking at their drawings, listening to their made-up songs (whether sung off-key in lovely tune), or watching Pea dance around the garden (with or without a stuffed animal/princess dress/fairy wings) lifts my spirits, and reminds me of the joy of childhood. Pea wrote this story (and I’m just waiting for her to ask when she gets HER own blog. I dread the day, as I have some idea how it might go – likely somewhere along the lines of this. Let’s not go there, ‘kay?) She wrote it all on her own, popping…

Day 8: Giving Thanks
I’m not much of an outdoorsy girl. My idea of “getting some fresh air” is reading a book outside in the sunshine with a glass of lemonade. It is because of this that I am very thankful for my very, very, VERY energetic spaniel and the need to wear her out take her for walks, especially on a dreary, cold, mizzly day. (Mizzle = mist + drizzle). If it weren’t for her, I’d miss out on all the beauty that surrounds me, even on a day that is best spent dozing on the sofa under a warm blanket, cup of tea and chocolate digestive on the table next to me.…

A dog of a day
I’m going to write about something pointless and only mildly annoying, because i have more annoying things…um…annoying me, and i am trying not to think of them, lest my head explodes. Or something. This is my back garden. (There isn’t much “garden” to our garden, true.)On the other side of those hedges, there are sheep fields. Macy is quite interested in sheep. The Hubs thought that maybe she’d get, erm, de-sensitized by seeing (hearing, smelling) all those sheep every day. *snort* in reality, she has become obsessed. This is what she sees through the fence. (ok. Shitty choice of pictures, but there ARE sheep in it. Squint. Work with me…

What I’m Reading Wednesday…or Thursday*
While there are a million things I should be doing (cleaning, laundry, exercising, to name a few), what I HAVE been doing is reading. And the only thing more addictive than my Kindle right now is my Kindle app for my iPad – I’ve been adding books right and left. Following up on a few book-related tweets by Kate Wilson (@Nosy Crow), I started reading some books that fall into the Young Adult category; in my opinion, they are young adult due to the age of the main characters, but will appeal to adults too. The books she recommended lead to more Young Adult novels, although, don’t be fooled –…

What To Do On A Rainy Summer Day, or, “Sugar Anyone?”
This morning, as it rained buckets, I wasn’t much in the mood to leave the house, so I baked a batch of chocolate cupcakes. When they had cooled, I set out frosting and pretty much every sprinkle, jimmie and Smartie I had in the house, and told the kids to have at it. I knew those paper liners that go between the foil cupcake liners could be used for something: I filled them with sprinkles and such that came in a bottle with no shaker lid!! I suppose I should have supervised a tad bit more closely, as they went a bit overboard, but they sure are pretty!!! I think…
