Ten Things Of Thankful: Rainy Days Edition
It’s raining. Again. I could be all “April showers bring May flowers” but the flowers and trees and grasses really just bring on allergic reactions, so it’s a struggle to appreciate the “ending a drought” aspect of the current situation. Particularly since the volume of rainfall is making me consider brushing up my Ark building skills, and also because we’re in the process of building a pool, and we’re only to the “dig a giant hole in the ground” stage. Given the current forecast of rain for the next 15 days, it becomes a bit worrisome. So I shall dig deep into my soggy wellies and offer up my ten things of thankful…

Port Stop: Maya Key, Roatan
I’m an avid watcher of HGTV, and two of my favorite shows are “House Hunters: International” and “Beachfront Bargain Hunt”, because I’m really meant to be living on the ocean but I likely won’t for a very long time so I must live vicariously through others. Roatan, Honduras has appeared frequently on HH:Intl and has been a bucket list destination from the first episode it was featured. Needless to say, finding Roatan on the Carnival Freedom itinerary was a key factor in booking that particular cruise. I don’t know much about the different beaches there (aside from what I’ve gleaned from House Hunters) so we did a little research on…

Why I’m OK with the Title of World’s Okayest Mom
I bought a fun shirt last week. My husband hates it. Here, let me show it to you: Yes, I’m proclaiming that I’m the “World’s Okayest Mom.” Fun, right? It’s comfortable, it’s funny, and it makes me smile. When my son saw it, he grinned and gave me two thumbs up. (He gets me.) My 9-year-old said “Maaaahhhm”. My husband, on the other hand, shook his head and said “Nice. That’s not much of a growth mindset, now is it?” If anything, it is irony, because if you’ve been a reader of mine for a while, you’ve picked up on this: I’m a perfectionist, and my own worst critic. It’s…

Ten Things of Thankful #2 – In Light Of Frustrations and Meltdowns
The week has flown by as waves of stress and anxiety swept over the house. I had to check to see if there was a full moon this week – I’m not a believer in all that woo woo, but given the emotional rollercoaster the kids were riding, it wouldn’t have surprised me. Instead, I’ve been dosing myself with calming essential oils, given that I’m still on this infernal diet and I can’t have a Tito’s and tonic after dinner. At least I smell lovely! It’s been a week of looking for things for which to be thankful. First and foremost, as many friends spent the week trapped at home with snow and…

Ten Things of Thankful: Numero Uno
My one word for this year is cultivate, and one of the things I’m hoping to cultivate is a deeper sense of gratitude, to be thankful in the little as such as the big. I’m hoping I have better luck with gratitude than I do with green plants. What I do with green plants is the opposite of that. RIP, every dieffenbachia I’ve ever owned. Although, honestly, the only reason my kids are also still alive and kicking is because they make enough noise… But I digress. I may do that a lot here, because I have not been able to corral my thoughts particularly well over the past few weeks. I’ve…

The Christmas Countdown
Well, here we are folks – in the last stretch before Christmas. When the dog woke me up at early o’clock on this fine, chilly Saturday morning, thoughts of the as yet unwrapped Christmas gifts dangerously half-hidden in the guest room cluttered my head, and any chance of going back to sleep slipped out the back door along with my rabbit-hunting canine alarm clock. Christmas Goals You see, each year, I start with one simple goal for my holiday shopping: have it all done by Black Friday. Which quickly gets updated to: Have all it all done (and wrapped) by the kids’ last day of school. The first goal was set while I lived…

Be Careful With Your Donkey
When you open an email from my Dad, you’re never sure what you’re going to get…. A clever joke? A very off-color joke? Photos of baby animals hugging? A cool video of just about anything? Sometimes, I get something seemingly light-hearted and silly…but one that creeps up on you and makes me think….this is one such joke. Bear with me here… An old man, a boy and a donkey were going to town. The boy rode on the donkey and the old man walked. As they went along, they passed some people who remarked “What a shame, the old man is walking and the boy is riding!” The man and…

When I Was Younger
When I was younger, I was painfully shy and overly sensitive. I was always afraid I’d say something to make me look terribly stupid, and it didn’t take much to make me cry. I’m still an introvert and far too sensitive for a forty-something, as I never did grow a thicker skin. (Fact: crying in the business world is generally unacceptable, so if you are thin-skinned, make sure you get a job that gives you an office with a door.) And since I’m still afraid of sticking my foot in my mouth, I’m going to be quiet until I get to know you better. (And if I’m not quiet, I’ve…

Jumping with Joy (and No Worries)
Oh, the dangers of laughing, coughing, jumping or running if you're a girl like me. But guess what? My worries are gone and I'm jumping with joy! #lifeafterleaks #ad

All opinions are mine alone. #QuakerRealMedleys #CollectiveBias Do you know what my biggest struggle has been as the kids have returned to school this week? Waking up and getting EVERYONE moving extra early after a summer of sleeping in! Since birth, my two have been early risers and it took until kindergarten just to get them to sleep until 7am. Something switched in their brains this summer and they both took to sleeping in until 8 or 9 – fantastic until school starts, and with it the 6am wakeup call. I don’t know who is having a more difficult time…
