I Wonder… (I wah-wah-wah-wah-wonder….)
My mind has been wandering today. And wondering… I wonder… …if I will EVER cross the street here without thinking “Right-Left-Right” (despite the fact that I don’t need to remind myself that the cars are on the opposite side of the road anymore); …if, before we return to the US, I will stop converting prices from pounds into dollars in my head when I shop… ….if I will EVER learn to properly pronounce the Welsh “ll” sound without sounding like a cat choking on a hairball (I have to say those town names really, really quickly, or have my son say it for me); …how long it will take Boo…

Fill in the Blank Friday
It’s Friday, and time to fill in the blanks! 1. A nervous habit I have is picking at my fingernails, especially when they chip. I also tend to chew at my cuticles). Dreadful, I know, and it drives my husband bat-shit insane. 2. Something that makes me sad is bullying – I can’t get over how early it starts in this day and age, and how children can be so cruel. This article, in particular, simply broke my heart. 3. Today I am thankful for the dog-walker, as she allows my overly bouncy and social spaniel to have a proper hard run with other dogs. No amount of walking with just the two of us…

A Painfully Awkward Trip Down Memory Lane, or, What I Wore to Prom
In what may possibly be THE singularly most embarrassing uncomfortable post in the short life of my blog, of all the possible weekly prompts for Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop, I chose: The prom dress. Or in this case, dresses. As I had two, and they were both horrendous hideous memorable. Oh, yes. Or, *oh.my.word* The year was 1984, and I was a sophomore. I still don’t remember why we didn’t BUY me a prom dress. (in all honesty, they were expensive, and we weren’t frivolous – those were the days of “layaway”, remember that?) Anywho…this dress was borrowed. More embarrassingly, it was borrowed from a lovely upperclassman who wasn’t actually…

It’s Monday. Let’s find something to be thankful for. Before I get too crabby.
The plumber finally came, fixed the radiator – kind of – and left, saying “I’ll bring the parts for those broken faucets…next week.” The kids bickered. All. Afternoon. The scale showed a weight gain this morning. The dog threw up her dinner. My husband went to bed – at 8:15 – with a headache, I’m staring down another massive pile of laundry to fold, and frankly, I’m feeling a little crabby. Clearly, it’s Monday. Wait – that sounds pessimistic. That won’t do. I need to dig – deep – to find gratitude. I have a working furnace to provide heat, and a roof over my head. I have a lovely, snuggly…

Fill in the Blank Friday (with a bit of thanks included)
T.G.I.F. people…bring on the weekend! It’s time to fill in the blanks with Lauren at the little things we do! 1. My favorite new blog of the moment is www.giverslog.com. AmberLee has some amazing, fun, happy crafty projects and fun recipes. I’m a crafty girl at heart and love to put a personal touch on things and her printables tick all the boxes. Since I tend to nest a bit in the winter months, I’m gathering supplies for some fun treats (and wishing I was back in the US to try out her Salted Carmel Ticket Sticks (hot chocolate on a stick). I’m also loving Suri’s Burn Book, as I love…

Day 10 of Giving Thanks: My Children’s Imaginations
Today, I am thankful for the wonderful, colorful, wacky and creative imaginations of my children. Reading their words, looking at their drawings, listening to their made-up songs (whether sung off-key in lovely tune), or watching Pea dance around the garden (with or without a stuffed animal/princess dress/fairy wings) lifts my spirits, and reminds me of the joy of childhood. Pea wrote this story (and I’m just waiting for her to ask when she gets HER own blog. I dread the day, as I have some idea how it might go – likely somewhere along the lines of this. Let’s not go there, ‘kay?) She wrote it all on her own, popping…

I Can’t Do Math in My Head, Among Other Things
Despite the fact that I have a degree in Finance, worked for a hedge fund (and actually worked for a time on the trade desk, where we traded currencies and commodities), I can no longer do math in my head. In fact, I’m even struggling to make sense of the sentence that I’ve just written. The best way to understand what we do is to know that we work in a similar fashion to forex brokers – we help people to trade currencies in the easiest and most efficient way. Yes, it can be a very complicated process, hence why it’s affected my own mind so much. Honestly? I think…

Day 9 of Giving Thanks: Comfort Foods (& My Favorite Snickerdoodle Recipe)
Living in another country is a wonderful experience, but every now and again the inevitable pangs of homesickness (or melancholy in general) set in. When this happens, I turn to my cookbooks and favorite recipes and work a little kitchen magic. Granted, it’s not much good for my waistline, but food has such a strong pull to memory for me that it will generally do the trick. One favorite childhood cookie, long forgotten to me but recently rediscovered, is the humble Snickerdoodle. Crispy on the outside, a titch chewy on the inside, redolent of cinnamon, it’s one of my many the perfect comfort food. This afternoon I baked a batch…
