    Fried Chicken Honesty

So my Dad sent me a joke the other day, one that was cute and clean. {image by Keith Davis Young via we heart it} My Favorite Animal Our teacher asked us what our favorite animal was, and I said, “Fried chicken.” She said I wasn’t funny, but she couldn’t have been right, because everyone else in the class laughed. My parents told me to always be truthful and honest, and I am. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and…

    Fill in the Blank Friday

Hurrah, it’s Friday! And now that I have unloaded on all of you, I feel much more relaxed and ready to take on the weekend, which looks to be busy and includes a joint birthday party for Pea and Boo with 21 of their closest school friends. (I had to put my foot down with Pea when the list started to include girls from years 3, 4 and 5 – she has a LOT of friends!) Boo was much more sensible and only picked his closest buddies. I’m a big fan of party places who will gladly do the cleanup for me, allowing me to come home and put my…

    R.I.P. Noodles

We experienced a loss this weekend: Noodles, Pea’s longtime penguin friend. Sadly, it was also his birthday – we had just sung him “happy birthday” (in English, of course, because he wouldn’t understand the Welsh version, apparently) earlier that morning over Melissa & Doug wooden cupcakes. Pea and Noodles met at Brookfield Zoo in 2007, and he came home to live with her. They did many things together, and he happily made the trip to Wales stuffed in a packing crate so that he could welcome her here. He’s put up with a lot, that poor penguin, and he didn’t deserve to go the way he did. Pea was tossing…

    Fill In The Blank Friday

Hooray, it’s Friday! It’s been a day of ups and downs, but I’m NOT going to whine (although I will wine *cheers*) so let’s just get on with the blanks: 1. The phrase or punctuation I overuse most is probably, um, well – the comma. And the hyphen. And….whatever. 2. Today I am thankful for having a friend who lets me shed some of my anxiety with verbal diarrhea and who can poke fun at me without being mean. 3. My best friend is my husband. Who else would I move to another continent for? Besides, he knows what a dork I can be, and loves me anyway. 4. A…

Redemption in the form of a little Knight

Today is World Book Day, which means (if you are a parent) that you have likely spent last night the past few days scrambling around trying to find some sort of costume to reflect a character from your child’s chosen book. While I am a book lover, I suck at creating costumes. The mention of Halloween strikes fear in my heart, and not for the typical reasons.  I resorted to my close friend, eBay and sorted out the situation early, only to discover that this year, the children needed to pick a character from a “traditional” or “classic” story. Would Cressida Cowell’s “How To Train Your Dragon” fall into this category?…

(It Should Be) Wordless Wednesday…(But It’s Not)

I had several lovely photos all picked out for Wordless Wednesday from yesterday’s St. David’s Day assembly…but then it occurred to me that my non-Welsh followers (all six of you) aren’t familiar with St. David, the patron saint of Wales, so a little background info would be helpful. St. David is the patron saint of Wales, and his feast day, March 1 is a national day of celebration in Wales. For the school celebration, there were many little girls wearing traditional Welsh costumes (a flannel or wool dress, apron, shawl, and hat), and  the boys were quite happy to wear red shirts that said “Cymru” (Wales) or Welsh Rugby shirts.…

Make Me Laugh Monday – Oh, the Things These Eyes Have Seen

I realize that some Europeans may well consider that Americans are….prudes when it comes to swimwear and/or nudity. Let me tell you, given what I have seen today, this is NOT a bad thing. I would have appreciated a shared sentiment of prudishness when I saw the 60+ nana poolside…topless. Or the very, very, VERY rotund gentleman wearing a very, very, VERY small swimming costume. Lying on the beach, legs spread-eagle, propped up on rocks, arms crossed behind his head. *shudders* I do not have pictures. That may have damaged my camera. I’ve seen a lot of grannies in bikinis today. Power to them, girlfriends…. The upside of all of…

    Puppy Love

Walking to the car with Pea last week, she looked at me and said, “I’m going to marry Huw.” Well, this was news to me. I thought she was going to marry Alfie when they grow up. I don’t know how much say Alfie had in this, so I’m not sure how he’ll feel about this new turn of events. I asked her “what about Alfie?” She thought a moment, shook her head, and said “I love Huw.” So you can imagine my surprise when she came out of school today with a handmade card…from Huw! (Which her big brother promptly scribbled on, so I can’t share its lovely cuteness.)…
