    On Accomplishments, Goals, and Donuts

On the internet, the question has been (repeatedly) raised: “There’s only ONE MONTH left in the decade. What are your accomplishments? “ This question has been weighing on my mind, and perhaps if it had been worded differently, as in “what have you done” versus “what are your accomplishments”, it wouldn’t niggle at me so (and yes, I’m that nitpicky.) If I had been asked “what have you DONE” I could say I lived in the UK, I traveled throughout Europe, I moved to Texas, I went to the American Music Awards (thank you, Kohl’s), I wrote a lot of blog posts, was published in an anthology and on Mamalode,…

    One Word for 2019: Re-Engage

Resolutions? Pffft. Not this girl. Give me One Word to focus on. I am not the girl for resolutions. Like most, I burst out of the gate with enthusiasm and energy…and then by March, those resolutions are cast aside like the photos from 2013 I printed in 2015 that still wait to be placed lovingly in photo albums. A few years ago I came across the idea of choosing just one word that I can focus on all year long, one that can guide my goals, big and small. My word was “thrive” in 2015, “cultivate” in 2016, and in 2017 it was “conquer“. I confess while I chose “moxie”…

This Month I’m Participating in NaNoWriBloPoDoSomeMoMo. (I’m Writing)

The first of November brings many things: a belly ache from over-consumption of the kids’ Trick-or-Treat candy (which, surprisingly, does NOT mix well with the margaritas I consumed to survive three hours of doorbell ringing); the lethargic gathering of Halloween decorations from around the house, which will typically sit on the hall bench for another few days until I find the energy to dig out the “Halloween decorations” bin from the garage; a panicked, anxious and last-minute sign up for “NaNoWriMo”, which stand for “National Novel Writing Month”, where I commit to writing about 2000 words a day, attempting to complete a novel; the alternate desperate commitment to participate in “NaBloPoMo”…

    One Word 2017: Conquer

I am not one for resolutions. And I’m downright disappointing at keeping promises to myself. Other people? No problem. Italian-Catholic guilt will get it done if determination and organization are lacking. All too often, however, I fall guilty to the mom phenomenon of putting everyone (and everything) else first to the detriment of herself.  I also lay the blame at the feet of my squirrel-like inability to focus, which I’m beginning to suspect may have something to do with my foggy brain and not just my ADD tendencies. Over the past few years, I’ve given up the idea of “resolution” and instead chosen one word, which encompasses all my goals for the year…

    The Christmas Countdown

Well, here we are folks – in the last stretch before Christmas. When the dog woke me up at early o’clock on this fine, chilly Saturday morning, thoughts of the as yet unwrapped Christmas gifts dangerously half-hidden in the guest room cluttered my head, and any chance of going back to sleep slipped out the back door along with my rabbit-hunting canine alarm clock. Christmas Goals You see, each year, I start with one simple goal for my holiday shopping: have it all done by Black Friday. Which quickly gets updated to: Have all it all done (and wrapped) by the kids’ last day of school. The first goal was set while I lived…

    Lists and Goals and Randomness

Isn’t she the cutest stinkin’ thing you ever saw? Where was I??? * * * I like lists. Lists are good. To-do lists? LOVE them. I love the feeling when I can check things off. Completion. Satisfaction. Success. Do you know what I don’t like? Resolutions – I rarely keep them, and then I spend more time berating myself because, yet again, I failed. In all honestly, I do much better at Lent. Giving something up or making a change – with a 40 day timeframe – is much more manageable concept, and as they say, you can make or break a habit in 30 days…. But still, that…
